The Walking Dead Season 3 Will Begin in 2016

After confirming The Walking Dead: Season 3 last year, Telltale Games reveals that the latest season in the popular point-and-click zombie series is coming in 2016.

After Telltale Games announced The Walking Dead: Season 3 at last year’s SXSW, the developer followed the reveal up by stating that a 2015 launch wasn’t happening. No release window details have been issued since, but based on the recent comments from Telltale Games CEO Kevin Bruner, it appears that gamers will be getting The Walking Dead: Season 3 sooner than expected.

Speaking to Mashable, Bruner stated that the first episode of Season 3 will premiere sometime in 2016, and that more information will be revealed at this year’s Comic-Con International. In addition to The Walking Dead: Season 3‘s launch window, Bruner also revealed the development team’s approach towards the story of this new season.

“From a role-playing, interactive storytelling point of view, it is not from the bag of tricks that we’ve ever shown anybody before,”

“The way that we’re dealing with and validating and retaining all those different playthroughs is really cool and unexpected and, I think, pretty innovative from the storytelling point of view.”

Bruner further added that the team’s goal with Season 3 is to attract a wider swath of fans, especially those who weren’t big fans of the somewhat underwhelming The Walking Dead: Season 2. As for current fans of The Walking Dead, Bruner said that Telltale have a solution regarding the issue of incorporating player choices.

“How do we go back and make sure all Walking Dead fans can get in while still keeping all of our storylines going? I think where we’re landing with the story for Season 3 does a really good job of both of those things.”

“It allows people who maybe haven’t people who maybe haven’t played [the first two seasons] to come in and get up to speed really quickly. But it definitely respects, honors and facilitates all of the various end points that Season 2 had.”

“We’ve got a strategy to help Season 3 players … collect all their data from the previous games. [W]e didn’t have the cloud services in Season 1 that we have now.”

“So we’re going to have a solution for everybody that we’re not talking about it yet.”

The reveal of a 2016 release window for The Walking Dead: Season 3 comes as a bit of a welcome surprise for fans. In addition to The Walking Dead: Season 3 and the remaining episodes of The Walking Dead: Michonne, Telltale have a number of other non-zombie projects coming this year. There’s the “mysterious” fifth episode of Minecraft: Story Mode still to come, while those who aren’t fans of Minecraft can look forward to Telltale’s adaptation of Batman sometime this Summer.

Given that Telltale releases a number of games each year, there have been a few quality issues regarding some of the developer’s latest titles. There’s a worry that by spreading itself a little too thin for 2016, the quality of some of Telltale’s upcoming games may be affected. But with Bruner recently stating that Telltale is ready to handle a larger workload for 2016, and that handling multiple series at once is no problem, the developer gets the benefit of the doubt for now.

With a confirmed 2016 release, an increased development team size, and Telltale’s reputation as the masters at episodic gaming, signs are looking promising that The Walking Dead: Season 3 will be a return to form for The Walking Dead series.

The Walking Dead: Season 3 is scheduled for a 2016 launch. No platforms have been announced yet, but it is expected that the game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
